January 30th – The Hempolics @ Theatre Severn Shrewsbury

THE HEMPOLICS are out to put those organic rootsy vibes back into music; with their fat radio-friendly hooks, bumping soundsystem bass and a wanderlusty, ineffably real sound all of their own...Led by the enigmatic Grippa Laybourne, THE HEMPOLICS caused an instant stir with their single Serious, and since then, Boss Clock Me Style, Black Flower and Me Love To Sing have all been playlisted by BBC6 Music with support from Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Rodigan & Don Letts to name a few. Combined with live performances honed at their own underground club night in London, they are becoming the worst kept secret on the UK circuit today.Their eclectic forthcoming album 'Kiss, Cuddle & Torture Vol. 1' has been recorded in back to basics fashion throughout the bedrooms and home studios of the band, producing an infectious mash-up of Reggae, Electro, Hip-Hop, Dancehall, Rock and Pop. The weather might be dull, but it's strictly sunshine vibes, resplendent with huge hooks and festival friendly choruses. THE HEMPOLICS have a storm brewing...

Big Busk Bonanza – £815 raised by Chairhouse presents for local charity

Big Busk Bonanza – £815 raised by Chairhouse presents for local charity

The chairhouse presents was delighted to be involved in Shrewsbury’s 2017 Big Busk event. A lovely £815 was raised by the evening gig at the Morris Hall which we were able to hand over to Karen Higgins on behalf of The Big Busk team, who do so much to support the work at Shrewsbury Ark homelessness project. On the bill were Beth Prior, The Flatlands and Garage Flowers and headliner Martin Stephenson. The evening was a triumph, not only because the gig raised money for such a worthy project, but also the spirit of community and positivity engendered by the audience and promoted by the artists. The evening culminated with a wonderful collaboration on stage between Martin and the youngsters of The Flatlands band which brought the house down. We are local promoters Mel Draycott, Chris Taylor and Barry Tench and it is our mission to put on edgy, eclectic and exciting music and spoken word events in Shrewsbury. To...

Special Guest added to our Big Busk gig – Beth Prior

Chairhouse presents are thrilled to announce that Beth Prior will be joining us for our Big Busk gig at the Morris Hall in Shrewsbury on April 1st 2017.2016 saw the release of Beth Prior's debut album, "Little Acts of Kindness", a successfully (over funded) crowdfunded album which she toured across the UK with her 7-piece collective last Autumn. Although she appears laid bare for this event with just a guitar, she is no less spirited."Beth Prior is a law unto herself. Her songs are carefully structured, and she has clearly studied songwriting a great deal. But she disguises the meticulous construction so well behind her rough and tumble indie aesthetic and stage presence that is never pretentious or boring. She is both impulsive enough to carry a show in a cellar (venue), and melodic enough to fill venues ten times the size. This is the paradox with Prior's music, and it makes her all the more captivating as an artist." ...

2017 – Lets carry you through

Happy New Year - Join us for some performance poetry in 2017 that will shake you to tears and laughter.“Poetry arises from the desire to get beyond the finite and historical - the human world of violence and difference - and to reach the transcendent or divine” (Ben Lerner – The Hatred of Poetry). What takes us above and beyond? Why is poetry turned to in moments of high emotion, grief and jubilation? Mike Garry’s poetry gathers in the details, wraps a comforting arm around our collective shoulders and says quietly and firmly in our ears – this is how it is, this is life, and death, and this is how we will carry on through it all.Come and see Mike and the Cassia String Quartet to kick our 2017 schedule off as they will reach for the divine and the transcendent at the Wightman Theatre on February 11th. ...

Check out their recent appearance on Seattle's KEXP online radio for a taster of what to expect.
